Yes, most boat refrigerators are designed for 12V or 24V DC. The crucial factor is whether your onboard battery can handle continuous operation – without recharging from solar, alternator, or shore power, a compressor fridge can drain an average battery overnight.
What insulation thickness do I need for multi-day trips?
For passive cool boxes, the thicker the wall insulation, the longer the temperature remains stable without re-cooling. For multi-day trips, models with stronger insulation are significantly more practical because you have to buy ice less frequently.
Can I use a regular household refrigerator on a boat?
That is not recommended. Household appliances are designed for 230V AC, not for rough seas, salt air, or fluctuating onboard voltage. Furthermore, they lack the necessary corrosion resistance – hinges and casings quickly rust in a marine environment.
How do I prevent mold in the cool box after the season?
Completely clean the cool box or refrigerator after its last use and, most importantly, allow it to dry completely. Then store it with the lid slightly open or the door slightly ajar so that air can circulate – stored closed, mold formation almost always occurs.
