The chain link width is crucial – not just the nominal chain size. Measure the individual link at its widest point and choose a hawse pipe whose inner opening allows the link to pass through with some play, without the chain getting jammed.
Is stainless steel or bronze better for hawse pipes on a wooden boat?
Both materials work, but bronze is the traditionally proven choice on classic wooden boats and does not create problematic galvanic voltage pairs with typical fittings. Stainless steel is more durable and easier to maintain, but its appearance does not suit every wooden boat.

Technically possible, but not ideal: Fairleads are designed for mechanical stress, but do not provide cable insulation and are often not truly waterproof. For cables, specially sealed cable glands are the better choice, as they safely keep moisture away from the cable sheath.
