What cleat length suits my mooring line?
As a rule of thumb: The cleat length should be approximately ten times the line's diameter. For a 12mm line, that would mean a cleat of about 120mm in length between the horns.
Stainless steel or bronze – which is more saltwater resistant?
Both materials are suitable for use in saltwater. Stainless steel requires less maintenance and is forgiving of little care; bronze will patina over time but also remains durable – it just occasionally needs more attention.
How do you properly seal the opening when installing a cleat?
Use a high-quality deck sealant compound (not silicone) and allow it to cure before finally tightening the nuts. This prevents water from penetrating the laminate and causing long-term damage.
Can I simply replace an existing cleat with a larger one?
Only if the new bolt hole spacings match the old ones, or if you professionally seal the old holes. Before purchasing, check the mounting dimensions of the new cleat and compare them with the existing pattern on your deck.
