What is the difference between a charge booster and a voltage regulator?
A charge booster actively transfers energy from one battery to another, adjusting the charging profile to the target battery type. A voltage regulator, on the other hand, maintains a constant output voltage without taking on any charge control itself. For separating starter and auxiliary batteries, a booster is the right choice.
Can I also operate a booster with a lithium auxiliary battery?
Yes, but only if the device offers a LiFePO4-compatible charging profile. Lithium batteries require a different charge termination voltage and do not tolerate trickle charging like lead-acid batteries. Before purchasing, check whether the booster has the appropriate profile or if it can be adjusted.
What cable cross-section do I need for connecting a high-power booster?
That depends on the current of the device and the cable length. The manufacturer's documentation specifies a minimum cross-section for each current strength – you should adhere to this strictly. When in doubt, it is better to choose one size larger to minimize voltage losses and heating.
Do I have to remove or switch off the booster if the boat is left for a longer period?
Most boosters enter a standby mode as soon as there is no input power, and then draw only minimal quiescent current. For very long layovers, it is still advisable to disconnect the input or maintain the battery with a separate trickle charger.
