How do I measure which stern platform fits my boat?
The decisive factors are the transom width, the distance between the mounting points on the transom, and the freeboard – i.e., the distance from the waterline to the platform edge. Take these measurements with a spirit level and a tape measure and compare them with the product specifications before ordering.
Is a teak stern platform more maintenance-intensive than an aluminum one?
Yes, depending on sun exposure and saltwater contact, teak requires regular care with teak oil or a special wood cleaner, otherwise, the wood will turn gray and crack. Aluminum is significantly easier to maintain in everyday use but should be electrically isolated from other metal on board to prevent contact corrosion.
Can I retrofit a stern platform without drilling into the transom?
That depends heavily on the hull. There are clip-on systems that can be attached to existing ladder mounts or cleats and do not require drilling. However, these solutions often have limited load capacity and are not available for every boat type – check the manufacturer's specifications for the maximum load.
How slip-resistant are GRP stern platforms, and can I improve the grip retrospectively?
Smooth GRP surfaces can become very slippery when wet. Many platforms come with a studded or textured surface from the factory; if this is not sufficient, self-adhesive anti-slip strips or spray-on anti-slip coatings can be retrofitted.
