What does inclination compensation mean and why is it important for my boating area?
Compasses are calibrated for specific geographic latitudes because the inclination of the Earth's magnetic field varies in strength depending on the region. For European waters, you need a model that is compensated for the northern zone – otherwise, the needle will stick and the reading will be unusable.
How do I know if the damping fluid in my handheld bearing compass is still in good condition?
Hold the compass up to the light and look through the viewing window: if the fluid is clear and bubble-free, everything is fine. Air bubbles or cloudiness indicate a leak and impair the damping – such devices should be replaced.
What minimum distance should I maintain from metal parts or electronics when taking a bearing?
As a rule of thumb, maintain at least 0.5 meters distance from anchor chains, engines, loudspeakers, and other compasses. Even a pocket knife in your hand can distort the result. When in doubt, take a bearing from the centerline and compare two bearings from slightly offset positions.
Can I use a handheld bearing compass as a backup for my permanently installed steering compass?
Yes, but only to a limited extent: a handheld bearing compass is designed for short, punctual bearings, not for continuous steering. In an emergency, it works, but it's more strenuous than a permanently mounted compass – and you need to know the deviation for your course steering range.
