What water resistance rating do I need for a handheld GPS at sea?
For marine use, at least IPX7 is recommended, which withstands temporary immersion up to 1 meter. If the device might go overboard, IPX8 is the safer choice – and integrated buoyancy or a float lanyard on your wrist is also advisable.
Can I transmit as far with a portable VHF radio as with a fixed-mount unit?
No, fixed-mount units typically transmit at 25 watts, while handheld units usually transmit at a maximum of 5 to 6 watts. The range is therefore significantly shorter – but for coastal waters and as an emergency device, this is sufficient in most cases.
How long do the batteries of a handheld GPS or VHF really last in use?
Manufacturer specifications usually apply under laboratory conditions. Cold, frequent screen use, and active GPS tracking noticeably shorten the battery life. When in doubt, plan with half the stated battery life and have spare batteries or a cigarette lighter charging cable ready.
