This mainly depends on the cable length. For runs over about five meters, or if the antenna is mounted inside a hardtop, an active antenna with a preamplifier is recommended. For short cable runs and open mounting locations, a passive antenna is often sufficient.
What connector type is common for GPS antennas on boats?
Most marine plotters use an SMA or BNC connector – check your device's manual. Adapters between the types work, but on longer cable runs, they represent another potential weak point for moisture and signal loss.
Can I operate a GPS antenna on a steel hull?
