Which BlueChart version is suitable for your plotter?

Garmin BlueChart is available as pre-loaded microSD cards and as a subscription via ActiveCaptain. In addition to the standard g3 content, g3 Vision maps include 3D map views, satellite overlay, and relief shading – useful if your chartplotter supports this display. Before purchasing, check which map series your device processes, as older Garmin plotters may not be able to display all g3 Vision features.

Area selection and map coverage

BlueChart maps are divided by geographical regions. If you primarily sail in the Baltic Sea, you don't need an Atlantic map – and vice versa. If you change sailing areas or plan longer trips, it's worth taking a look at the map areas: some maps overlap at borders, others have gaps. Take a close look at the coverage map of the respective region before you buy.

Updates and long-term use

Garmin offers regular updates for BlueChart maps. Anyone who frequently travels in changing areas or calls at ports where channels and depths change should keep an eye on the update status of their map. MicroSD cards purchased once do not receive automatic updates – for this, there is Garmin OneChart as a subscription option.

For use on board, it is recommended to back up the map on the plotter and store the original microSD securely. Moisture and direct sunlight can damage SD cards in the long term.
