What rated current does my galvanic isolator need?
The isolator must cover at least the rated current of your shore power connection – typically 16 A or 32 A for recreational boats. When in doubt, follow the fusing of your shore power connection at the dock.
Does a galvanic isolator impair the safety of the protective earth?
A standard-compliant isolator according to current standards allows sufficient current to pass through in a real fault condition (e.g., short circuit) so that the fuse trips. The protective function is maintained – this is precisely the difference to a simple interruption of the protective conductor, which would be dangerous.
Where exactly is the galvanic isolator installed?
It is installed in series in the protective conductor (green-yellow cable) of the shore power cable, as close as possible to the feed-in point on the boat. Phase and neutral conductors are not interrupted.
Do I notice if my galvanic isolator is still working?
You won't directly feel anything – the isolator works silently. A simple test method: regularly check sacrificial anodes. If they are consumed significantly faster than expected, this can be an indication of galvanic current. Some newer devices have an integrated LED indicator that signals the operating status.
