What is the difference between A2 and A4 stainless steel for fittings?
A4 stainless steel contains molybdenum and is significantly more resistant to chlorides and saltwater than A2. For all fittings used outdoors or in a saltwater environment, we recommend A4; A2 is more suitable for protected indoor areas.
Can I mount stainless steel fittings directly on an aluminum hull or aluminum deck?
Direct contact between stainless steel and aluminum causes galvanic corrosion, which attacks the aluminum. Separate both materials with non-conductive plastic washers or a suitable sealant, and if possible, choose fastening screws made of the same material as the substrate material.
Why can't I remove my stainless steel screws from the fittings anymore?
Stainless steel on stainless steel tends to gall – the surfaces microscopically weld together under pressure. Using assembly paste or special anti-seize during installation reliably prevents this and ensures the screws can be easily removed later.
How do I maintain stainless steel fittings to keep them rust-free in the long term?
Rinse the fittings regularly with fresh water, especially after use in saltwater, and keep crevices and threads free of dried deposits. For stubborn discoloration, a special stainless steel cleaner helps; however, you should avoid aggressive chlorine-containing cleaners.
