What diameter do I need for my boat?
This depends primarily on the weight of your boat. As a starting point, a common rule of thumb is: about 1 mm line diameter per 3 meters of boat length – a 10-meter boat would therefore require approximately 10 mm. However, always check the stated breaking strength in the product data sheet, as this is more informative than the rule of thumb.
What is the difference between polyester and nylon for mooring lines?
Polyester hardly stretches and remains dimensionally stable even when wet – good for fixed berths. Nylon stretches significantly more under load and absorbs shocks, which is advantageous with tidal range or choppy seas, but requires more foreline.
How do I finish the cut end of a synthetic line?
The simplest method is thermal cutting with a hot knife or a lighter, which melts the fibers together. More durable options are a splice or a whipped end, both of which prevent the line from unraveling under load.
How do I know when a mooring line needs to be replaced?
Visible signs include frayed or broken outer fibers, hard or discolored areas, and a significantly reduced diameter in certain sections. When in doubt, it's better to replace it – a mooring line is not the right place to economize.
