How do I know if my shroud needs to be replaced?
Look for broken individual strands sticking out of the lay, known as "meat hooks." Such damage usually first appears directly at the terminals and swages. If you find more than one broken strand, or if rust has penetrated the wires, the wire should be replaced before the next season.
Can I use 1x19 wire for running rigging?
No, 1x19 wire is stiff and designed for standing rigging. In places with frequent bending stress – for example, over blocks or sheaves – it quickly breaks due to material fatigue. For running rigging, you need a more multi-strand construction that tolerates bends better.
What swage size do I need for my wire?
The swage must exactly match the wire diameter – manufacturers usually provide a dimension table. A swage that is too large will not crimp reliably; one that is too small cannot be properly inserted. If in doubt, measure the old wire with calipers and confirm the specification from the rigging drawing.
Is galvanized wire a sensible alternative to stainless steel on board?
Galvanized wire is cheaper, but it corrodes significantly faster in a saltwater environment – especially at connection points and damaged areas of the zinc coating. For permanent use on board and standing rigging, stainless steel is recommended, as it is significantly lower maintenance and lasts longer.
