How do I choose the correct sheave diameter for my line?
As a rule of thumb, the sheave diameter should be at least eight times the line diameter. A radius that is too small will pinch the line, increase friction, and significantly shorten the lifespan of the rope.
When is a ball bearing block better than a plain bearing block?
Ball bearing blocks are worthwhile wherever high loads act on the sheave and smooth operation is important – typically for main and jib sheets. Plain bearings are easier to maintain and less sensitive to dirt, making them well suited for less stressed positions.
Can I simply screw a deck block onto an existing fitting hole?
Only if the attachment point is designed for the forces that will actually occur. Below deck, a backing plate or washer should distribute the load over a larger area, otherwise you risk tears in the GRP or wooden deck.
How do I know if a deck block needs to be replaced?
Visible cracks or chips on the sheave, a worn or corroded axle, and significantly increased running resistance despite rinsing are clear signs of needing replacement. When in doubt, turn it by hand briefly before the start of the season – a block that jams or judders under load should no longer be used.
