What is the difference between a dock fender and a regular boat fender?
Dock and pile fenders are designed for stationary use at the berth and often have larger contact surfaces as well as special fastenings that do not slip even under continuous pressure and swell. Regular hand fenders are intended for short-term mooring during maneuvering and are not designed for the same continuous load.
How do I properly attach a fender to a round pile?
For round piles, fenders with a strap system or ring insert are suitable, as they enclose the pile instead of just pressing against it. This keeps the fender in position, even if the boat changes its position due to wind or swell. The exact mounting solution can be found in the respective product specifications.
How high should I attach the dock fender?
The fender should be positioned so that it lies between the boat and the dock at all expected water levels – i.e., tidal range, different loading, and swell. Adjustable suspensions help to readjust the height if necessary.
Which material is better for dock fenders: PVC or polyethylene foam?
PVC fenders are robust and durable, but can become harder in cold weather and put more strain on the hull. Foamed polyethylene fenders cushion softer and are often gentler on the paintwork, but can give way slightly under very strong continuous pressure. Which material is better depends on the berth, the size of the boat, and the material of the dock.
