Deine Fragen / Unsere Antworte
- Can I use the same battery for starting and powering the onboard electronics?
- Technically possible, but not recommended in the long run. Starter batteries cannot withstand frequent deep discharges caused by an autopilot or a cooler. If you continuously operate supply consumers, you should plan for a separate battery bank system.
- What is the difference between AGM and normal wet-cell batteries on board?
- AGM batteries are sealed, can be installed in any position, and are less sensitive to vibrations – these are clear advantages on board. Wet-cell batteries are cheaper to buy, but require ventilation and occasional checks of the electrolyte level.
- Why must marine cables have tinned copper?
- Salt air and humidity quickly corrode normal copper, which increases contact resistance and, in the worst case, leads to heat generation. Tinned copper is significantly more corrosion-resistant and is explicitly intended for use on board.
- How do I properly charge a LiFePO4 onboard battery?
- LiFePO4 batteries require a charger that explicitly supports this battery type and uses the appropriate charging profile. Conventional lead-acid chargers can damage LiFePO4 batteries or not fully charge them – the charger should be checked for compatibility before purchase.
