What grade of stainless steel should I choose for exterior fittings on a sailboat?
For outdoor use, especially on sailboats exposed to saltwater, at least A4 stainless steel (1.4401 or 1.4404) is recommended. A2 can be prone to contact corrosion with continuous saltwater exposure.
How do I permanently attach built-in components to GRP hulls?
On GRP laminate, you should always use washers to distribute point loads. Sealant (e.g., polyurethane or silicone-based) prevents water from entering the laminate – especially important for deck penetrations.
Which floor coverings are suitable for damp interior areas like the cockpit or forepeak?
Non-slip plastic gratings or coated panels with a closed surface are the better choice here. They do not absorb water, are easy to clean, and allow for ventilation of the subfloor.
How do I care for plastic fittings outdoors so they don't become brittle?
UV radiation damages plastics over time. Regular treatment with a suitable plastic care product slows down embrittlement. In winter, it is advisable to cover or remove particularly exposed parts.
