Which protection class do I need for a surface-mounted lamp in the cockpit?
For outdoor areas like the cockpit, at least IP65 is recommended, which protects against jet water. IP67 is better if the lamp is also exposed to direct spray water.
Do surface-mounted lamps for 12 V also work on a 24 V electrical system?
Not automatically. Many models are voltage-specific. Check the specifications in the data sheet before you buy – the wrong electrical system will destroy the lamp or provide too little light.
How do I properly seal the cable gland when installing an outdoor lamp?
Use a marine-approved sealant or butyl tape around the drill hole before screwing on the lamp. The housing alone does not seal the cable gland.
Does it make a noticeable difference in power consumption whether I choose LED or halogen?
Yes, significantly. Depending on the model, LED surface-mounted lamps only require a fraction of the power of a comparable halogen lamp. On long voyages or when lying without shore power, this is a relevant factor for battery capacity.
