What difference does tinned copper cable make compared to regular copper cable on board?
Tinned copper corrodes significantly slower on the individual strands because the tin layer delays the penetration of moisture. Especially in cable ducts or at terminals exposed to salt air, this noticeably extends the service life.
What protection class should a remote control installed in the cockpit have?
For an open cockpit area, at least IPX5 is recommended, meaning protection against water jets from any angle. If you install the remote control in the immediate vicinity of the railing or the helm, you should rather opt for IPX6 or IPX7.
How do I properly seal cable glands through the deck?
The most reliable are cable glands made of EPDM or neoprene in combination with a marine-grade sealant. It is important that the gland fits tightly to the cable and that the sealant remains flexible even after curing, so that vibrations do not cause cracks.
Can I use commercially available mounting material from the hardware store for loudspeaker brackets on board?
In the short term, it often works, but screws and brackets made of normal steel or aluminum without surface protection rust or oxidize significantly faster in the salty and humid environment. For permanently low-maintenance installations, it is better to use A4 stainless steel or UV-stabilized marine plastic.
