Deine Fragen / Unsere Antworte
- Can I apply copper-containing antifouling to an aluminum hull?
- No. Copper and aluminum form a galvanic cell, which leads to significant contact corrosion on the hull. There are special copper-free antifoulings for aluminum – when buying, explicitly look for approval for aluminum.
- How many coats of antifouling are advisable?
- Most manufacturers recommend two coats for sufficient protection over one season. A third coat may be advisable in areas with particularly heavy fouling, such as the keel and waterline. However, more does not automatically mean longer-lasting – the quality of the preparation is crucial.
- How long after the last coat must the boat be put into the water?
- This depends on the product and is stated in the manufacturer's data sheet. Many antifoulings should be launched within 12 to 24 hours after the last coat, so that the active ingredients are activated. If this period is exceeded, the effectiveness may decrease.
- Can I apply a self-polishing antifouling over a hard one?
- Generally not without an intermediate step. Different antifouling systems are often not directly compatible with each other. If you change the system, you should completely remove the old antifouling or at least consult the product data sheet and the manufacturer before applying.
