Deine Fragen / Unsere Antworte
- What type of connector do I need for my VHF antenna?
- Most marine VHF antennas and radios use the PL-259 connector (also known as SO-239 socket). However, check the connections on your specific device, as some manufacturers use TNC or BNC connections – adapters are available, but the fewer intermediate connections, the better the signal.
- Can I use one antenna for both VHF radio and AIS reception?
- Yes, with a suitable antenna splitter, a single antenna cable can be split between a VHF radio and an AIS receiver. Make sure to use a splitter that is designed for marine use and introduces as little signal attenuation as possible.
- How do I protect antenna connectors from corrosion and moisture?
- Self-amalgamating butyl tape or marine-grade heat shrink tubing over the connector reliably keeps moisture out. Additionally, a thin layer of corrosion protection spray on the metal parts is recommended, especially if the connector is directly exposed to the weather.
- What should I consider when routing the cable through the deck?
- The cable gland must be absolutely watertight – use specially designed cable glands or cable entry grommets with a sealing lip. Avoid excessively tight bending radii directly behind the gland, as the cable can break there over time, and additionally seal the edge of the bore with a UV-resistant sealant.
