- How do I find out which gypsy fits my anchor chain?
- The gypsy must match the chain dimension (e.g., 8 mm or 10 mm) and the stud type (short-link or long-link). You can find this information in the technical data of your chain or on the chain link itself – be sure to specify it before purchasing.
- What cross-section does the cable for an electric anchor winch need?
- That depends on the motor power of the winch and the cable length. Cross-sections that are too thin lead to voltage drop and overheating. Refer to the manufacturer's specifications for maximum current consumption and factor in the cable length from the battery to the winch.
- Can I retrofit an anchor winch even if there is no foundation in the bow?
- In principle, yes, but the effort is considerable: you need a pressure-resistant, watertight foundation, new cable routing, and often adjustments to the bow roller. A specialist company should at least assess the statics and sealing.
- What is the difference between a normal electric winch and a free-fall winch?
- With a free-fall winch, the chain can run out uncontrollably or controllably by disengaging the drum, without the motor running – this saves time and battery power when anchoring. The disadvantage: the stopper must function reliably, otherwise the entire chain will rush uncontrollably into the water.
