Deine Fragen / Unsere Antworte
- Which chain size suits my boat?
- As a rough guide: the longer and heavier the boat, the stronger the chain. However, it is also crucial that the chain pitch matches the gypsy of your anchor windlass or bow roller – measure this before buying a new chain.
- How long should my anchor rode or anchor chain be at a minimum?
- As a rule of thumb, it should be three to five times the maximum water depth in which you anchor – and more in windy or choppy conditions. So plan ahead and buy a bit more length rather than coming up short at the wrong moment.
- Can I simply extend or replace an anchor chain if I still have an old one?
- In principle, yes, but only if the chain size, grade, and chain pitch match. Different chain generations can be coupled with a connecting link that matches the load class of both parts – never connect with an undersized shackle.
- Is a nylon anchor rode really safe enough compared to a chain?
- Nylon anchor rodes are widely used on modern boats and are absolutely reliable if correctly dimensioned. The decisive advantage is the stretch, which absorbs shocks. Important: Chafe protection in the area of the bow roller and a strong connection to the chain or directly to the anchor are mandatory.
