Can I use aluminum anodes in fresh water?
No, that is not recommended. In fresh water, aluminum anodes tend to form a passive layer and hardly work electrochemically. For fresh water, magnesium anodes are the right choice.
How do I measure which anode I need as a replacement?
Measure the length, width, height, and the center-to-center distance of the mounting holes on the old anode. For shaft anodes, the inner diameter is also crucial. Alternatively, you can find these values in the documentation of your engine or drive.
Why is my new anode barely working – it's almost unchanged after one season?
This usually indicates poor electrical contact: paint or antifouling under the anode interrupts the circuit. Expose the contact surface, place the anode directly on bare metal, and tighten the mounting screws firmly.
May I use aluminum and zinc anodes simultaneously on the boat?
You should avoid that. Different anode materials have different electrode potentials and can influence each other, so that one of the anodes hardly provides any protection. Stick to a single anode material per boat.
