Can I use a regular VHF antenna for AIS?
Yes, with an AIS/VHF splitter, an existing VHF antenna can be used for both. However, the antenna should be designed for the entire frequency range including the AIS channel – which is the case for most marine band VHF antennas.
Which coaxial cable is suitable for AIS antennas?
For short lines up to about five meters, RG-58 is sufficient. For longer runs, such as mast mounting on sailboats, you should use lower-attenuation cable such as RG-8X or RG-213 to minimize signal loss.
Does the AIS antenna need to be separate from the VHF antenna?
No, an active splitter allows shared use of an antenna for both transponder and radio. However, if you place a high value on maximum reception range or frequently operate in busy waters, a dedicated AIS antenna is safer.
How do I mount an AIS antenna waterproof on the mast or superstructure?
The connector at the antenna base should be protected against moisture with self-amalgamating tape or heat shrink tubing with adhesive. For penetrations through the deck or superstructure, a marine-grade cable gland is recommended, not simple silicone.
