What is the difference between an AIS receiver and a Class B transponder?
A receiver shows you other vessels but does not transmit its own signal – so other traffic participants do not see you. A Class B transponder receives and transmits simultaneously, making you visible to commercial shipping and other AIS users.
Can I share the AIS antenna with my VHF radio?
Yes, a common VHF antenna can be used for both radio and AIS via an antenna splitter. The attenuation caused by the splitter is negligible in practice and usually unproblematic for typical cruising distances.
How do I connect an AIS device to my chartplotter?
The most common interfaces are NMEA 0183 (serial, two wires) and NMEA 2000 (bus system with a T-connector). Which option is suitable depends on the connections offered by your plotter – many new devices support both standards.
Do I need approval or a license to operate a Class B transponder?
The transponder itself must be type-approved, which is the case for all regular commercial products. For transmitting on VHF, a valid VHF radio operating certificate and a ship's radio license are also required – you should have these on board anyway.
