How do I determine the breaking load my backstay tensioner needs to have?
The starting point is the breaking load of the installed backstay wire or rope. The tensioner should at least achieve the same breaking load so that it doesn't become the weakest link in the backstay system. If in doubt, consult the rig file or the mast builder's specifications for the backstay force.
Can I retrofit an existing backstay tensioner without replacing the entire backstay?
Yes, if the connection dimensions at the mast base and the deck fitting match the new tensioner, and the length of the tensioner when retracted does not over-tension the existing wire. Measure clevis forks and bolt diameters beforehand and compare them with the product specifications.
How long should the insulated section be on a backstay insulator for antenna operation?
That depends on the frequency used and the antenna tuner – a general length cannot be specified. Many antenna tuners work with a wide tuning range, so different insulator distances can work. It's best to consult the tuner manufacturer or an experienced radio operator.
Do I need to treat a hydraulic backstay tensioner specially during winterization?
Hydraulic tensioners should be stored in the retracted position to protect the piston. Rub the outer surfaces with a light corrosion inhibitor and check the tensioner for leaks before it is put under load again for the next season. In case of leakage, replace seals before the boat is rigged again.
