Garmin GMR Fantom 18

The Garmin GMR Fantom 18 solid-state radome radar has an 18-inch (45.7 cm) dome and a power output of 40 W. It supports MotionScope technology, which uses the Doppler effect to detect and mark moving targets to help avoid potential collisions. It can be fully integrated with certain Garmin chartplotters.

High-performance radar with 40 W power and a cone width of 5.2 degrees

The unit offers an excellent range of 6 meters to 48 nautical miles – even in fog or rain. With its 5.2-degree cone width, it delivers high-resolution images and high antenna gain, enabling it to detect even faint distant targets. The result? You get a clear picture of the coastline, other vessels, and developing weather conditions on your Garmin chartplotter. Target positions are displayed consistently, echo separation is excellent, and operation is reliable. The 8-bit true-color images allow you to distinguish large targets from small ones and also offer improved echo separation. Radar data is overlaid on charts (autopilot or heading sensor recommended). Power consumption is low, the unit powers on instantly, and there's no warm-up delay like with magnetron radars. Rotation speeds of 24 rpm for reduced power consumption and 48 rpm for fast screen refreshes are available.

MotionScope Doppler technology

GMR Fantom radars utilize the Doppler effect to detect and mark moving targets, helping you avoid collisions, locate flocks of birds, and gather weather data. The Doppler effect is the frequency shift of the radar echo due to the relative movement of the target. This allows targets moving away from or approaching the radar to be instantly identified. MotionScope highlights moving targets in different colors on the radar display, enabling you to navigate around other boats or storms, or to find fishing spots where birds are feeding on the water.

Target variable Allows you to adjust the size of objects on the radar image.

Automatic bird amplification When anglers spot birds on the water's surface, they know there are fish there. To increase your chances of success, use the automatic bird enhancement feature. This will help you detect flocks of birds on the water's surface, where small baits are likely to be found.

Signal traces The display shows a trail of the previous signal, allowing you to quickly and easily identify moving targets and potential collision hazards. If an autopilot or heading sensor is connected to your Garmin network, the paths are corrected to account for the boat's rotation.

Dual range A single radar antenna can provide images of the immediate surroundings and more distant areas, which are displayed on the chartplotter on a split screen with independent area settings and controls.

Dual radar support Offers redundancy and the ability to select data from one or two different radar sources on each display unit on the boat.

Dynamic automatic amplification The dynamic automatic gain adjusts automatically to your environment to ensure optimal performance under all conditions.

Dynamic sea state filter The dynamic sea state filter automatically adjusts the gain to changing sea conditions, with user options for low, medium, or high filtering.

Radar overlay Displays the radar image overlaid on the chartplotter's map page. Best results are achieved when using an autopilot or heading sensor.

MARPA target tracking MARPA (Mini Automatic Radar Plotting Aid) tracks up to 10 selected targets, allowing you to keep an eye on other ships and avoid collisions.

Protection area Set up a protected area so that you will be warned if an object enters this area.

VRM and EBL Variable Range Markers (VRM) and Electronic Bearing Lines (EBL) allow for quick measurement of distance and bearing to ships and land.
