What IP rating do I need for a spotlight on the outer deck?
For outdoor use on deck, at least IP67 is recommended, which means protection against temporary immersion. In areas with direct spray water or wave impact, you should rather opt for IP68.
Can I use a normal 12V spotlight from car accessories on board?
Technically, this often works, but automotive lights are not designed for saltwater and continuous moisture. The housings corrode faster, and the IP ratings are usually lower than for marine products – not a recommended solution in the long run.
How often should I check the seals of my permanently installed onboard spotlights?
Once per season before commissioning is a good rhythm. Rubber seals and diving rings can become brittle due to UV radiation and cold – a quick look can prevent damp electrics.
Is a waterproof flashlight with a red light mode worthwhile for a night trip?
Yes, the red light mode preserves your eyes' dark adaptation, which is very helpful when on watch or looking at a map. For onboard use, this is a useful additional function, not just a gimmick.
