Deine Fragen / Unsere Antworte
- What IP rating do I need for a socket in the cockpit?
- For exposed outdoor areas and the cockpit, the socket should have at least IP66 or IP67 to prevent damage from splashes and temporary submersion. In enclosed companionways or interiors, IP44 is often sufficient.
- Can I install a normal household USB socket on a boat?
- No – household sockets are not designed for moisture, vibration, or the voltage fluctuations of an onboard electrical system. For use on board, you need models explicitly designed for marine 12V or 24V systems and sealed accordingly.
- Which plug do I need for shore power connection in the harbor?
- In European marinas, the blue CEE plug according to IEC 60309 with 16 A and 230 V is the most common. Some harbors – especially in North America or older marinas – use other standards, so it's worth checking the harbor information beforehand.
- How do I prevent electrical contacts on board from corroding?
- Gold-plated or silver-plated contacts corrode significantly slower than bare brass. Additionally, a contact spray based on penetrating oil, applied after the season, helps displace water. Connectors that are rarely disconnected should be moved once a year to keep the contact surfaces clean.
