- Which fuse should be connected directly to the battery?
- ANL or strip fuses are used for the main line to inverters, anchor winches, or bow thrusters. They are placed as close as possible to the positive terminal of the battery and protect the entire cable up to the consumer.
- How do I choose the correct amperage?
- The starting point is the cross-section of the cable to be protected, not the wattage of the device. You can find the appropriate rated current in a cable sizing chart – the manufacturer of your distribution panel often provides specific recommendations.
- Can I use a circuit breaker as a replacement for a fuse?
- In principle, yes, if the rated current and installation location are suitable. Circuit breakers have the advantage that they can be reset after tripping. However, you should always investigate the cause before resetting – a breaker that trips repeatedly indicates a real problem.
- What should I look for in fuse holders in damp areas below deck?
- Holders with gold-plated or silver-plated contacts and a sealing protective cap are the first choice. Open holders without a cover corrode at the contacts and create contact resistances, which can lead to voltage drop and heat generation.
