Deine Fragen / Unsere Antworte
- What material is best for latches and hooks on deck?
- For use on deck and in splash areas, stainless steel (A4 grade) is the first choice because it requires little maintenance and can permanently withstand salt water. Brass and bronze go well with classic boats and are also seawater-resistant, but require occasional polishing if you want to keep the surface shiny.
- How do I measure an old latch to find the right replacement?
- The screw hole spacing, the total length of the latch, and the width of the mounting plate are important. Also note whether the latch is mounted on a flat surface or on an edge – some models are only suitable for flat surfaces.
- Do screws need to be sealed when installing deck hardware?
- Yes, always – even if the fitting is not directly in the water area. Water penetrating through open screw holes can cause wood to swell or soak into GRP laminate. Use a marine polysulfide or polyurethane sealant, but not silicone, which adheres poorly to most boat materials.
- Can I install cylinder locks on deck externally?
- This is possible, but you should make sure that the cylinder is explicitly declared as weather-resistant or marine. Standard cylinders from the hardware store will rust or seize after a season outdoors. After winter storage, it is worthwhile removing the cylinder, cleaning it, and storing it dry.
