As a galvanic sacrificial anode, it protects the surrounding metal parts by corroding itself – thus keeping your drive protected.
Tip: Aluminum anodes are the right choice for saltwater and brackish water. In freshwater, you should switch to zinc anodes, as aluminum is less active there.
