What display size is suitable for a helm station in the cockpit?
From about 9 inches, the display can be read well from a normal standing distance, even in sunlight. However, the actual installation situation is crucial – measure the distance from the steering wheel to the planned installation location before you decide.
Can I continue to use my existing depth sounder?
That depends on the transducer type and the connector standard. Many older transducers with proprietary connectors can be integrated via adapters, while others require a new purchase. Carefully examine the data sheet of your transducer and the connection list of the new MFD.
Can a multifunction display be retrofitted with AIS?
Yes, provided the device has a free NMEA-2000 or NMEA-0183 input. An external AIS receiver is then simply integrated into the network. Some MFDs also offer an internal AIS receiver – this saves wiring effort.
How do I protect the display from frost and UV damage in winter?
If possible, remove the device and store it in a dry, frost-free place. If it remains installed, a precisely fitting cover made of UV-resistant material protects the screen. Apply corrosion protection grease or protective caps to the connectors so that the contacts survive the winter break undamaged.
