- Which adhesive should I use for bonding teak decks?
- For teak decks, you need an elastic single-component polyurethane adhesive that permanently accommodates wood movements and remains water-resistant. It's crucial to ensure the substrate is completely grease-free and dry and to adhere to the manufacturer's recommended layer thickness.
- Can I use silicone to seal through-hulls below the waterline?
- Standard silicone is not suitable for this. For underwater applications, you need a product explicitly approved for continuous water contact – this will be stated in the product data. Polyurethane sealants or special marine sealants are the right choice here.
- Can polyurethane adhesive be removed after curing?
- Hardly, and only with great effort – cured PU adhesive must be mechanically removed, which quickly leads to scratches on GRP. Therefore, it's better to work carefully from the beginning and wipe off excess immediately with solvent while the product is still fresh.
- Do I need a primer before bonding or sealing to GRP?
- That depends on the product. Some adhesives and sealants adhere directly to clean, sanded GRP, while others require an adhesion promoter. You'll find this information in the respective product data – and it makes all the difference between a durable and a loose bond.
