- How do I know which cleat size fits my mooring line?
- As a rule of thumb, the length of the cleat should be about eight times the diameter of the line. A 12mm line therefore needs a cleat of at least 90-100mm in length. If cleats are too small, the line will only rest on the edges under load and wear out faster.
- Do I need to consider anything special when installing a cleat on a GRP deck?
- Absolutely: drill holes in GRP decks should be sealed with epoxy resin before the fittings are installed to prevent water from penetrating the laminate and softening it in the long term. A suitable sealant should also be applied between the cleat and the deck, and a backing plate is recommended below deck for load distribution.
- What is the difference between mooring rings and cleats - when do I use which?
- Cleats are suitable wherever lines need to be quickly made fast and unfixed, i.e., classically for mooring and securing. Mooring rings are more suitable for fixed turning points or as attachment points for ropes that are left unattended for longer periods - they cannot be released as quickly, but they also hold more securely under heavy strain.
- Can I use stainless steel cleats on a classic wooden boat?
- Technically yes, but many wooden boat owners prefer brass or bronze because these materials visually match the wood better and can be more easily reworked or polished if necessary. In addition, bronze fittings react less problematically with wood electrochemically than stainless steel when different metals are involved.
