What rope diameter should I consider for a rope clutch?
Each clutch is designed for a specific diameter range, which is stated in the product description. If the rope is outside this range, the jaw will either not grip properly or will damage the rope's surface. When in doubt, it is better to use the upper end of the range, not the lower.
Can I later extend a single clutch to a multi-clutch bank?
That depends on the manufacturer and the series – some systems are modular, others are not. When purchasing, check whether the chosen clutch is designed as a component of an extendable bank if you wish to secure more halyards in the future.
How do I recognize worn clutch jaws before they fail under load?
Rounded or polished teeth on the jaws are the clearest sign. Practically, you will notice it when the rope starts to slip under load, even though the clutch is closed. Such jaws should be replaced before the next trip.
Do I need to consider anything special when installing into a sandwich deck?
Yes, absolutely. Without a reinforcement plate or a laminated metal insert under the deck, the bolt flange will press into the core with repeated load peaks. A precisely fitted backing plate distributes the forces and prevents water from penetrating the core.
