Deine Fragen / Unsere Antworte
- What tunnel diameter do I need for my boat?
- The tunnel diameter is tied to the specific bow thruster – you cannot simply install any propeller into an existing tunnel. Accurately measure your existing tunnel or, for new installations, refer to the manufacturer's specifications, which are usually linked to the boat's weight and hull shape.
- 12 V or 24 V – which is better for a bow thruster?
- 24 V systems are more efficient for greater thrusts because, for the same power, only half the current flows, meaning thinner cables are sufficient. For smaller boats with an existing 12 V on-board electrical system, a 12 V bow thruster is usually the simpler solution. Never mix on-board voltage and bow thruster voltage without a suitable converter.
- How much thrust do I need for my boat?
- There is no blanket answer, as windage area, hull shape, and cruising area play a major role. As a rough starting point, about 3–4 kgf per ton of displacement is considered – for high-sided motor yachts or windy cruising areas, you should plan for more.
- Can I install a bow thruster myself or do I need a shipyard?
- Milling and laminating the tunnel into a GRP hull requires craftsmanship and is difficult to correct if mistakes are made – many owners have this done by a shipyard. The electrical wiring, however, is feasible for experienced DIY enthusiasts, provided the cable cross-sections and fuses are correctly dimensioned.
