Deine Fragen / Unsere Antworte
- What cable gauge do I need for an additional consumer on board?
- This depends on the current draw of the consumer and the length of the cable. As a rule of thumb: the longer the cable and the higher the current, the larger the cross-section must be to avoid voltage drop and overheating. For safety-critical consumers, you should use a cable calculator or the tables from ABYC or DIN standards.
- Can I use a charging booster for lead-acid batteries with LiFePO4?
- Generally no. LiFePO4 batteries require a different charging profile than lead-acid batteries, and many boosters for lead-acid batteries do not shut off correctly when the lithium battery is full. Look for devices that explicitly support multiple battery types and allow you to switch the profile.
- How do I protect electrical connections in the bilge area from corrosion?
- Only use waterproof marine connectors or encapsulate connections with heat shrink tubing with adhesive. Open terminals and standard automotive connectors will quickly rust in the damp bilge atmosphere and increase resistance, leading to malfunctions and heat generation.
- How many fuses do I need and where do I install them?
- Every circuit should be fused as close as possible to the battery or distribution panel – this protects the cable over a minimal length in the event of a short circuit. The fuse size is determined by the maximum permissible current of the cable, not by the nominal current of the consumer.
