What protection class do I need for lights on deck?
For outdoor use on deck, you should plan for at least IP67 – this means protection against temporary immersion. In particularly exposed areas such as the bow or stern, IP68 is the better choice.
Do normal LED light bulbs work on board?
Commercially available 230V light bulbs do not fit into the on-board electrical system. You need lights or light bulbs that are explicitly designed for 12V or 24V DC voltage – always pay attention to the voltage specification in the product description.
Do navigation lights need a specific approval?
Yes. Navigation lights must comply with the COLREGs (Collision Regulations) and meet the prescribed visibility ranges, which depend on the length of your boat. A corresponding declaration of conformity or approval should be indicated in the product description.
How do I prevent outdoor lights from fogging up from the inside after one season?
Check seals during seasonal maintenance and replace them at the first sign of cracks. Check screw torques, but do not overtighten – overtightening can damage seals just as much as loosening. After the season, store the lights dry and with slightly open covers so that trapped moisture can escape.
