Deine Fragen / Unsere Antworte
- Can I use one antenna for both VHF radio and AIS simultaneously?
- With an AIS splitter, this is possible – it separates the signals so that the radio and AIS receiver can use the same antenna without interfering with each other. Without a splitter, you should plan for a separate antenna for AIS.
- How does cable length affect reception?
- Coaxial cable attenuates the signal – the longer the cable, the more loss. For long distances, you need low-impedance cable with low attenuation. As a rule of thumb: it's better to invest a little more in the cable than to skimp on antenna height.
- What does the dB value mean for VHF antennas?
- The dB value describes the antenna gain. Higher values mean more range horizontally, but also a narrower radiation pattern. On a sailboat that rolls and pitches, an antenna with lower gain can therefore be more reliable in everyday use than one with a very high dB value.
- What is the most common connector type for marine antennas?
- PL-259 is the standard for VHF marine antennas and fits SO-239 jacks, which most marine radios have. GPS antennas, however, often use BNC or TNC connectors – this information can be found in the respective device's manual.
