It sacrifices itself in salt water and brackish water, so your engine block and underwater parts don't have to.

Tip: Check your sacrificial anodes at least once per season - at the latest when an anode is degraded by more than 50%, it should be replaced. In continuous operation or with strong galvanic load in the harbor, even more frequent checks are recommended.
